A BIT OF PLASTIC ROBS HUFF OF PODIUM FINISH IN BRNO

A minor technical infringement on his Chevrolet Lacetti robbed Rob Huff of a podium finish at Brno in the Czech Republic and instead of moving up into 4th in the FIA World Touring Car Championship the 28-year old driver from Cambridgeshire remains 6th, after the points he'd scored for initially finishing 3rd in Round 10 of the series were taken away from him.

Having started 9th on the grid, Rob drove brilliantly around the fast 3.35 mile circuit to take the chequered flag in 3rd place and score six points. After the race Rob's car was disqualified by the stewards for 'non-conformity of the front anti-roll bar link'. The team had used a plastic bush instead of a metallic bush, and although that gave the car no performance advantage the disqualification saw Rob lose his six points.

It was a frustrating end to what had been a hard fought race weekend. Having set the second fastest time in Free Practice 2, Rob qualified a strong 4th on Saturday to line up on the second row of the grid for the first of two races on Sunday. "I am happy with my fourth place, it is a good result taking into account that I carry 37kg of ballast, but it is a pity to lose second position in the very closing minutes of the session," said Rob. "The car was feeling good and my last lap was as fast as my best one; unfortunately I lost two tenths in the first section, otherwise I think I could even be in pole today."

Having scored 27 points in the last four races – more than any other driver in the WTCC – Rob was confident that his good run would continue, but contact with another car at the first corner damaged the steering on his Lacetti. On a circuit with 14 corners, several of which are very long and high speed, Rob did well to get his car to the finish, finishing one place outside the points in 9th.

Starting from 9th in the second and final race, Rob made good use of his repaired Chevrolet to make several great overtaking manoeuvres as he climbed up the field. In an exciting race, he eventually crossed the finish line in 3rd, prior to the car's disqualification at post-race scruntineering.

"My first race was unfortunately ruined in a contact, my steering got bent and I had to concede several positions," explained Rob. "The afternoon race was quite lively, as everybody could see. It's impossible to tell what happened, there was so much going on at every corner and cars all over the place! I had a good start, then it was hard fighting during the entire race, at some point I was hit and lost my rear bumper and four places but was able to catch back, keep the car out of trouble and finish third. Unfortunately, those good points were lost after the car was disqualified for a minor issue."

The next round of the WTCC takes place at Estoril in Portugal on July 12-13.
