FOURTH PODIUM IN CHINA COMPLETES A GREAT SEASON FOR ROB
Rob Huff ended a great 2007 FIA World Touring Car Championship campaign by
finishing 3rd in his Chevrolet Lacetti in the first of two races in Macau.
It was his fourth podium finish of the season, after his race win in Anderstorp
(Sweden), his 2nd place in Porto (Portugal) and his 3rd place finish at his
home race at Brands Hatch.
Located 45 miles west of Hong Kong, the 3.8 mile Guia street circuit in Macau
is the most challenging on the WTCC calendar. It's the longest track in the
entire WTCC, and contains over a mile of nearly flat-out driving, with only
a slight lift at the Mandarin Corner, the fastest bend in the WTCC. Over 65%
of the circuit snakes along the side of a hill and down to the Melco Hairpin,
which is the slowest corner in the WTCC. The entire circuit has no run off
areas and is lined with concrete walls, making it one of the most spectacular
and dangerous racing circuits in the world.
Qualifying took place on Saturday (November 17th), and mid-way through the
45 minute session Rob was down in 21st place; but a fantastic lap by the
27-year old driver from Cambridgeshire saw him rocket up to 5th. The track
conditions improved in the closing stages of qualifying which allowed other
drivers to better their times, including Rob's team-mate Alain Menu, who
claimed his fifth pole of the season, yet Rob was still pleased to qualify
7th in the strong 30 car field.
"It wasn't too bad, but I had the feeling I was quicker than I actually was,"
admitted Rob. "As the temperature dropped when the sun started setting, the
track became a bit faster, so maybe I went out just a bit too soon for my
last flyer. In any case, the strength of the Chevrolet Lacetti on the streets
again clearly showed today."
The opening race the following day began with a rolling start and by the end
of the opening lap Rob had moved up two places to 5th. He was following Gabriele
Tarquini and Augusto Farfus closely, and his prediction that these two would
clash came true on the ninth and final lap. As Farfus' BMW spun into the wall
on the exit of Lisboa Corner and Tarquini's damaged SEAT Leon slowed, Rob
picked the perfect line through the debris to climb to a well deserved 3rd
position.
In dry and sunny conditions, the track temperature remained at 27°C when the
second race at Macau got underway just 30 minutes after the finish of Race
1. With the top eight from the first race starting in reverse order, Rob made
a good standing start from sixth on the grid. However, this time the infamous
Lisboa Corner wasn't so kind to him. Tiago Monteiro, who had started alongside
Rob on the fourth row, turned in on him entering the tight right hand corner.
Monteiro's SEAT Leon hit Rob's Chevrolet Lacetti, bending a wishbone. Rob
managed to nurse the car back to the pits, but the damage forced him to retire
from the final race of the 2007 season.
"I had a very good start in race one," said Rob. "At one point I thought of
coming on the radio to ask Nicola Larini to back off a bit, as I could see
that Gabriele Tarquini and Augusto Farfus in front of me were having a serious
scrap for position. I didn't want that to go wrong for us to hit their debris
and then ruin our race. As it turned out, it eventually did go wrong, but
fortunately it was while exiting Lisboa Corner rather than under braking for
that turn. I just managed to avoid Augusto's wreck but ran over some body
panels anyway, luckily without puncturing. That incident moved me up to third
which was very nice considering I had started seventh. After the start of the
second race, coming into Lisboa, Tiago Monteiro turned in on me and hit me
on the left front wheel, bending the wishbone. A shame because I had had a
good start and was looking forward to another points finish."
