WTCC RACE VICTORY FOR ROB HUFF IN SWEDEN
Rob Huff scored his first race win of the 2007 season, when he recorded a
sensational victory in Round 13 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship
in Sweden. Victory was made all the more sweeter as Rob had never raced at
the fast and demanding Scandinavian Raceway before, but the 27-year old
driver from Cambridgeshire mastered for former Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit,
and the tricky changeable weather conditions, to dominate the first race
and finish 11th in the second.
Located 100 miles south-east of Gothenburg in the Jönköping region of southern
Sweden, the Scandinavian Raceway has hosted six Formula 1 Grand Prix (1973-'78)
and is flat and wide, with open grass run-off areas. It features three relatively
long straights (one of which, the Flight Straight, takes its name from the
fact that it is part of a runway!) and long 90-and-above degree turns, several
of which are banked. It was always going to be a challenging circuit, especially
for the drivers who, like Rob, had never raced there before, and heavy showers
of rain, a slippery track and difficult tyre selection options made the challenge
even more gruelling.
Qualifying on Saturday saw the 30 minute session begin with heavy rain and
a wet track and end with an almost dry track and a superb battle for pole
position. Rob did exceptionally well to qualify his Chevrolet Lacetti in
3rd position.
"I kept the set-up for dry conditions we had worked on in the morning and
just waited for the track to start drying," said Rob. "We had some pretty
precise weather forecast pointing to that, and we took the right decision.
The dry line came out very quickly and I could do three-four very good laps.
It's nice to be in the top three in qualifying for the second time in a row."
In the first of two races on Sunday, Rob made a brilliant rolling start from
the second row, to overtake pole-sitter Tiago Monteiro (SEAT Leon) and his
Chevrolet team-mate Nicola Larini, who started on the front row. Rob got to
the first corner in the lead and used the best of his grooved wet weather
tyres in the worst of the conditions to build up a big lead in the first
half of the race. As the track dried and his wet tyres began to lose grip,
Rob held on to his lead to time his run to the chequered flag to perfection,
finishing ahead of Monteiro.
Rob kept his wet tyres for the second race, and with the top eight finishers
from race one starting in reverse order, Rob began the standing start from
the fourth row of the grid. Contact with James Thompson would unsettle the
balance of Rob's Lacetti and from the first lap onwards he would struggle
for grip. He did defend his position well, and whilst this helped his team
score an amazing 1-2-3 finish, Rob came home in 11th place.
"I needed that win – it has really boosted my confidence and I'm over the
moon," said Rob. "I'd never been to Anderstorp before, so the circuit was
completely new to me, and the weather conditions were very difficult. I made
a belting start in the first race and took the lead going into the first
corner. I took a gamble on wet weather tyres and I found that I had a lot
more grip than I'd expected – so I decided to push hard and gain an advantage
while I had the chance. After the first lap I was two and a half seconds in
the lead, after the second lap I was three and a half seconds ahead and it
just went on like that until half way through the race I was eight seconds
ahead – which in close touring car racing is unheard of. I knew the track
was drying and my wets were going to start losing grip, so I just eased off
a little and tried not to overheat them. Although Monteiro was closing in
on me towards the finish, I had it all under control and took a very pleasing
win.
"I made another good start in the second race and overtook Monteiro and James
Thompson, but in doing so I got a little squeezed on the run down to the first
corner and James' Alfa touched the rear wheel of my Chevrolet and put the
back of the car out of alignment – and after that I just struggled for grip,"
continued Rob. "I was on wet tyres again, and as the track dried the drivers
on slick tyres were catching. With my team-mates leading the race, I did my
best to keep our rivals behind me for as long as possible and I think it
worked, because it gave them the breathing space to score a one-two-three
victory.
"It was a great team result in Sweden and naturally I'm personally delighted
to win as well. I'm really looking forward to our next race meeting in
Oschersleben, as I think we will go very well there as well."
Rounds 15 and 16 of the FIA WTCC takes place at Oschersleben in Germany on
August 25-26.
