HUFF FRUSTRATED IN CHINA
Rob Huff was twice the unfortunate victim of someone else's accident in the
incident-packed final rounds of the 2006 FIA WTCC around the tortuous 3.8 mile
Macau street circuit yesterday. The Chevrolet Lacetti driver, who qualified
20th after a red-flagged and rain-hit session prevented him from repeating
his strong practice performance was trapped in a multi-car pile-up at the
first corner in race one.
With the track almost completely blocked, 25 year-old Rob had no choice and
nowhere to go as he had to patiently wait while the wreckage was cleared
before he could continue. Thereafter though, and with his car in great shape,
Rob drove a steady race to make up the places, crossing the line ninth at
the end of the nine lap race.
"The car was good, I was able to pull away easily and maintain a good pace,"
said Rob. "It's a real pity to have lost over 20 seconds in the jam at the
beginning. I was really stuck bumper-to-bumper between two cars and could
only wait. Otherwise, I could have finished eighth easily and this would
have changed everything for race two".
Unfortunately, the second race proved short-lived for the WTCC race winner
from Cambridge. He made a superb start and managed to avoid another first
lap, first corner incident but when Gabriele Tarquini crashed heavily at
the Solidão Esses, Rob was again forced to take avoiding action, locking up
and crashing into the wall.
"Tarquini went off just in front of me, crashing massively on the right and
then on the left. There was no space to go as there were debris and liquids
all over the place. I stood up on the brakes but the wheels blocked and lost
control of the car on the oil, hitting the wall as well".
