HUFF STORMS THROUGH IN SPAIN
Rob Huff fought back from being eliminated in race one to take a storming
15th after starting from the pit lane, in yesterday's second FIA WTCC race
at the Circuito de la Comunidad Valenciana Ricardo Tormo in Spain. The
penultimate rounds of the 2006 championship were looking good for the
former SEAT Cupra Champion and multiple BTCC race winner after posting the
third quickest time, the highest Chevrolet driver, in Saturday's second
free practice session.
Come qualifying though, the Brno race winner struggled with the set-up on
his Chevrolet Lacetti, after making changes to the suspension settings
required following a tyre change. The result saw the 25 year-old Cambridge
driver line up in 13th place for the 15-lap race held on Sunday afternoon.
"My last set of tyres wasn't as good as the previous ones, so we went a
bit stiffer on the front roll bar in qualifying," said Rob. "But that
obviously wasn't the way to go and I suppose we just missed the boat."
Race one got underway on Sunday afternoon and despite the disappointing
grid slot, Rob was confident of being able to work his way through the
field as he had in Turkey. As the cars entered the first corner though,
he become the unfortunate and innocent victim of another drivers' accident
as reigning World Champion Andy Priaulx spun off and collected the number
6 Lacetti on his way.
With extensive damage sustained, Rob was off on the spot but a sterling
job by the Ray Mallock Limited team between the two races, saw the car
repaired just in time to take up position at the end of the pit lane, from
where he was forced to start. As the race got underway and the pack passed
the exit of the pit lane, Rob's race began and a storming drive through the
field saw him make up ten places over the course of the 13-lap race, crossing
the line 15th at the flag.
"That wasn't the result I wanted or expected after being up at the front
in free practice. In race one, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong
time, and had nowhere to go when Priaulx crashed into me. For the second
race, the team did a great job to get the get the car repaired; unfortunately
I had to start from the pit lane which is obviously a huge disadvantage."
"So I suppose getting up to 15th isn't too bad, but not what I wanted.
Roll on the next race, where hopefully we can end the season with a positive
and successful finish."
Rob now enjoys a six week break before the final rounds of the 2006 FIA
World Touring Car Championship which take place at Macau over the weekend
of November 18/19.
