HUFF STORMS TO SIXTH IN TURKEY
Rob Huff continued his superb form to take a storming sixth place finish
from 15th on the grid in the second FIA World Touring Car Championship race
in Turkey yesterday. After struggling with a mis-handling car following a
hit from Luca Rangoni in race one, Rob was forced to start way down the order
on the eighth row for race two.
But another lightning start and stunning recovery saw the Chevrolet Lacetti
star scythe his way through the pack after gaining a couple of places when
cars went off on the first two laps. Over the course of the race, the 25
year-old former SEAT Cupra Champion and multiple BTCC race winner, clawed
his way through the field, taking sixth from Dirk Muller on the final lap.
After winning the last round of the championship, in Brno, Rob was carrying
15 kilos of success ballast for this event. Despite that he was happy with
his 14th quickest time in qualifying for race one, set just before the heavens
opened ten minutes into the session. "We had planned to make some small
changes to the rollbar settings for each set of tyres, but obviously we only
managed to put just one on. In the wet the car felt good as well, although
I didn't push.
"Then in race one, I went inside Rangoni to overtake him but he just wouldn't
have any of it," said Rob. "He leaned on me so I gave him some room, but when
he turned in he just chopped me. I very clearly had the quicker car and the
corner but he did it anyway. The hit disturbed the toe-in on the front right
of the car and in turn that made it very difficult for me to turn in properly."
After a dry race one, the day's second race was delayed by more than two hours
after a rainstorm flooded parts of the Istanbul track. Despite the fuel
pressure falling away in certain corners, Rob was delighted with the performance
of his RML-prepared car and heads to the penultimate rounds of the series,
at Valencia on October 7/8 in confident mood.
"A couple of cars went off in front off me on the first two laps, so that
helped in race two. But I had a very good car this weekend and although the
fuel pressure fell away in certain corners, I was able to pass quite a few
cars again today. Hopefully we can reproduce the good form and get another
good result in Spain."
