HUFF TOP CHEVROLET DRIVER AGAIN
Rob Huff once more out-performed his Chevrolet Lacetti team-mates to take
ninth place in the eighth round of the 2006 FIA World Touring Car Championship
at Oschersleben this weekend. The 25 year-old Cambridge driver was forced to
start race one in a lowly 23rd position after having his quick lap destroyed
by two BMW's in qualifying.
The track conditions throughout the morning free practice and qualifying
session played a major role in the outcome of the grid line-up, the rain
stopping shortly before the qualifying and ensuring the scrap for positions
would go down to the wire as the track dried. As the conditions changed and
the positions continually swapped, things were hotting up in the dying minutes,
until the session was red-flagged with just four minutes to run. When it was
resumed, Rob was deprived of a final flying lap after two BMW's caused him
to run wide in the last corner.
Starting race one from the 12th row of the grid, Rob charged through the grid,
losing a wing mirror in one dramatic overtaking manoeuvre, and making up an
amazing 11 places. Soon he was on the tail of his team-mates Alain Menu and
Nicola Larini and after passing them, led the trio home in formation to take
12th place.
The second race saw Rob make a superb start to get into ninth place at the
end of the first lap. Another faultless drive from the former SEAT Cupra
Champion and BTCC race winner saw him chase down former BTCC Champion Yvan
Muller and keep double WTCC Champion Andy Priaulx behind.
"I think race two was a good result," said Rob at the finish. "I made a great
start and made up three places on the first lap, after that I spent pretty
much the whole race behind Yvan and ahead of Andy. Most of the time there
were just inches between us and they are both hard racers I can tell you.
It's not easy trying to pass a former BTCC Champion while trying to keep a
double WTCC Champion at bay!"
Rob's next WTCC event will be in Curitaba, Brazil on July 2.
