DISAPPOINTING END TO THE SEASON FOR HUFFY
Rob Huff's 2005 season ended in disappointment when twice he was forced off
the track and into the barriers, at the season finale WTCC event around the
Macau street circuit in China. The 25 year-old Cambridge driver, in only
his second season in touring cars, qualified tenth for the first of two races
at the tricky Guia track after great team-work by the RML Chevrolet Lacetti
team enabled Rob to slip-stream his team-mate Nicola Larini.
"It wasn't easy out there, there were cars going off everywhere and there
was a lot of heavy traffic. Every time I attempted to pull out the stops
someone went off and the session was halted. At the very end I also got
caught out after a small misunderstanding with another driver."
Lining up on the fifth row, Rob's first race ended dramatically in the
barriers on the first lap when Jörg Müller went wide entering Lisboa bend.
He hit the wall and bounced back into the path of Rob, who simply had nowhere
to go. They in turn collected Tom Coronel and with all three cars extensively
damaged and blocking the track, the safety car was deployed.
Thankfully, the RML team were able to repair his car for the second race,
although he was forced to start from the pit lane. A superb charge over
the opening laps in race two saw him up to 11th by the fourth lap, until
an incident with Adriano De Micheli, Peter Scharmach and Marc Hennerici at
Fishermen's Bend, ended his race prematurely.
"Obviously it was a very disappointing end to the season for me." said Rob.
"But we had some great races out there this year, the car has improved a
lot since the start of the season and that's reflected in the fantastic
results we've been able to achieve over the past few races. I hope we can
continue this rate of improvement for 2006 so that we can be in a position
to regularly challenge for honours."
