HUFF "A DREAM COME TRUE" AS HE CLINCHES HOLIDAY INN SEAT CUPRA CHAMPIONSHIP

  • Robert wins first race to take title

Robert Huff realised a 15 year dream when he was crowned Holiday Inn SEAT Cupra Champion after winning round nine at Thruxton today. The 23 year-old, was bowled over by his title victory, which secures him a "works" drive with SEAT in next year's FIA European Touring Car Championship.

"I can't put it into words just how I feel right now," said an emotional Robert at the end of a fraught ten round series. "Since I was eight, I've dreamt of a moment like this, to be a works driver in a professional racing series, and now driving for a team like SEAT next year is absolutely awesome. For ten minutes after the race I couldn't take my helmet off, and had to ask my Dad if I had actually won the title."

"In terms of the race, well I made a good start to hold position from third on the grid and managed to get by Gavin (Smith) at the chicane. Stefan was ahead and I knew that second place would be enough to enable me to have an easy run in the second race so I just concentrated on keeping it smooth and away from the kerbs. When I saw Stefan suddenly slow at Goodwood Corner, I could see he had a puncture, which handed me the lead. From then on it was a case of driving carefully to the flag, and it was just great to win another race. That's 8 top 4 positions from 10 rounds including 7 podium finishes."

Jason Plato, former British Touring Car Champion, was also quick to praise Robert. "In my opinion, the right man has won the Championship. Rob's performed well all year and has been the most consistently fast driver in the series. He's turned disappointing grid positions and mishaps into race wins and points-scoring results, which is exactly what you need to do to win a championship."

The second race, which also had Robert on the second row, saw him leap into the lead on the first lap, and things were looking good for a repeat performance until a puncture put paid to his chances of the double. His main series rival Hodgetts went on to win, ahead of Gordon Shedden and Stephen Colbert.
