HUFF MAINTAINS SEAT CUPRA SERIES LEAD WITH TWO SECOND PLACES
- Fastest lap keeps Rob at the head of the points table
Top British racing driver Robert Huff maintains his championship lead in the
Holiday Inn SEAT Cupra Championship with two well-deserved second places at
Silverstone today. The 23 year-old from Newmarket, admitted that Silverstone
is not one of his favourite circuits and so was delighted to have taken two
high scoring points finishes to maintain the series lead.
"Good weekend, I'm still in the lead by a point and both my worst circuits
as it were are now out of the way, and with two seconds, a first and a fourth,
I can't complain. I think I did well to keep up with Stefan (Hodgetts) this
weekend, because on Friday everyone was at least a second if not a second
and a half off him, so I think I'm the only one who closed the gap up to him."
The day's opening race had Robert on the third row in fifth place and after
another superb lightening first lap, was up into second, behind eventual
winner Hodgetts as the cars crossed the line at the end of the first lap.
Lap after lap the pair ran nose to tail, with Robert right on the leader's
back bumper as the cars entered the complex, but his efforts were all in vain
as his tyres went off, leaving him take second at the flag, less than half
a second adrift, but with another valuable point for fastest lap.
"Great result, started fifth and finished second," said Robert after the day's
first race. "I had a good start, but Julian (Westwood) made a great getaway
and I had to lift off as I thought I was going to get boxed in. There was a
bit of a coming together at the first corner between Stephen (Colbert) and
Gavin (Smith) and when Colbert rejoined he tried to take me off too. I managed
to blow him away though and it was a case of catching James (Pickford) and
Hodgetts up. I could see Hodgetts had a good lead so I knew I had settle down
and get on with things."
"I got up with James, and us three were quite a bit quicker than everyone
else, and managed to pull away a bit. James pretty much waved me through,
I think he was trying to preserve his tyres or something. Stefan had about
a four second lead by this time but within two laps I'd cut that right down
and had a blinding third and fourth lap, where the tyres were working really
well, but as soon as I caught him the tyres blew up like balloons, I think
I probably pushed a bit too hard on that lap. Two or three times I went to
overtake him round the outside and both times he tried to plant the car into
the side of me."
For the second 10 lapper around the Northamptonshire Grand Prix circuit, Robert
lined up on the front row alongside Hodgetts and instantly slotted into second
place as the cars entered Copse for the first time. Lap after lap, Robert
looked as though he were going to make a move, again the pair running nose-to-tail
through the Becketts complex, until the seventh lap, when he understeered
off at Copse, enabling Hodgetts to pull away to take his second win.
Despite the problems though, Robert was pleased with the results of the day's
racing, "Another second place, I can't complain. A CV joint went about 3 laps
to go which is why I kept going off at Copse, the car just wasn't going round
right-hand corners. It spilt oil and grease over the front left tyre just as
I was going into Copse and it just understeered off the track twice and lost
me a second both times I did it. I knew the driveshaft was beginning to grind
a bit so I had to ease off. Hopefully at Oulton I'll pick up a couple of wins
although Thruxton's my circuit and Rockingham is a track I've done a fair bit
of work at, so all in all I'm happy with the results so far and feel confident
for those races coming up"
