From Motorsport Aktuell:
The recent WTCC weekend in Estoril was a bit of a holiday race. The track is situated between Lisbon and the holiday resorts at the Atlantic shore. After a slight drizzle during Friday's test, the rest of the weekend took place under bright sunshine, but with an ever-increasing wind, which built itself up to stormy breezes come Sunday afternoon. With hot tarmac temperatures and a strong tail wind in turn 13, one of the decisive corners of the entire circuit, tyre wear and aerodynamics were the key to good races. We at Chevrolet found some goood solutions for both areas and really looked to be right on the pace during practice and qualifying. I was fairly optimistic for the races - but they didn't quite go as I had hoped for. Still, it was not a bad weekend at all. I could score nine points altogether. I'm pretty pleased with that. After the start of race 1, I had to try and pull of a daring move around the outside to gain both momentum and track position for the following couple of corners. But when I went passed Jordi Gené, he just came back across. The impact bent the steering. That was a little unfortunate: It meant I couldn't keep the pace of Andy Priaulx and Yvan Muller in front. But with a fourth and a fifth, I'm still pretty pleased with the weekend. We had a bent car in race one after Gené hit me into turn one, and we had bent car in the second race as well. That was a bit of a shame, as I could have achieved a better result based on the speed I had in free practice. But I still moved up a place in the World Championship standings so it wasn't too bad. After Estoril, we move on to Brands Hatch - my home race in the WTCC. I'm already looking forward to it. Plenty of people will be coming down to support me in Kent - friends as well as family members. Some people might say this might add to the pressure during a race weekend. I don't see it like this at all. I just want to go down there and enjoy it. I won my first ever touring car race in the BTCC there, and we also had a number of good results with Chevrolet on this circuit. It's a very challenging track, a real drivers' circuit - and one that seems to suit our car quite well. I'm looking forward to going back there. A podium would be nice. |
