HUFF WINS AGAIN!

  • Fourth Formula Vauxhall win for Cambridge racer

It was a repeat performance for rapid Cambridge-based racer Robert Huff as the Formula Vauxhall Championship returned to the high-speed Thruxton circuit in Hampshire, where he repeated his dominant victory of earlier in the season. Back in a single seater after recent success in an MG sportscar, Huff took pole position for the 10 lap race and broke free from the rest of the field to take his fourth outright win of the season in the competitive championship. Now three points clear at the head of the points table, possibly more if a disputed result from earlier in the season is resolved in his favour, Huff has become the favourite to take the series title.

Racing for the famous Jim Russell Racing team, whose World Scholarship Huff won, 20-year-old Huff was pleased to take his first pole position of the season. The quickest circuit in the country, the 1600cc Formula Vauxhall single seaters reach over 145mph around the track's fast sweeping corners.

"There hasn't been a day in the last six weeks when I hadn't thought about this race," said Huff. "It's been a long time since the last Formula Vauxhall race and I was determined to be ready for Thruxton. It's such a quick circuit and one I really enjoy, a real driver's circuit, so it was great to take my first pole there.

"It was a heck of a race - my best of the year. I got a good start, and was ahead through the quick corners, but Thruxton is so fast that you tow the cars behind round. Up the hill to the chicane for the first time, the car behind dived past, but got his braking wrong and I went back into the lead. Next lap we were three abreast into Church - the quickest corner on the circuit at about 130mph - but I managed to emerge ahead.

"Over the next few laps I managed to pull far enough ahead of the rest to break the tow, leaving them to fight amongst themselves. I was just looking in my mirrors and relieved to see no-one there. It was great to take the win, but in the final laps the two cars behind tangled and let my title rival come through to take second! Despite that, I'm delighted with pole position and a win - I couldn't be happier."

Next race - Mallory Park, Leicestershire, 1 October
