HUFF AWAITS OFFICIAL VERDICT

  • Confusion at end of race for Cambridge racer

Cambridge racer Robert Huff headed the Formula Vauxhall Championship before this weekend's round at Lydden Hill, Kent, but in a confused finish to the race he now awaits the verdict of series officials to know his actual finishing place and its impact on the tight points battle. Depending on the outcome of the deliberations of the championship Clerk of the Course this week, Huff could either be leading the championship by two points - or in second trailing the new leader by just one point!

Scheduled for 20-laps, an incident led to the cars running behind a Safety Car for four laps, and shortly after they were released there was another accident. Confusion over quite how many laps were actually run at racing speed after the Safety Car means that 20-year-old Huff is yet to find out whether he gains the points for second or third - and now awaits the official decision in days to come.

"It was a strange weekend," said Huff, who drives for Jim Russell Racing, after winning their World Scholarship. "It was the first time I had ever been to Lydden and qualifying was interrupted because the circuit started braking up - which meant I had even less time to learn the track.

"I made a good start and was challenging for second, when the car in front got sideways, I put two wheels on the grass, and thought it wise to lift off the accelerator and tuck back into fourth! It was a good battle in the lead group, though I was suffering a bit because the car in front was leaking water which was making it slippery for me at the circuit's hairpin.

"Then someone had a big off and we ran behind the Safety Car for four laps while that was sorted out. Once we were racing again on the first lap I got a good run on the car in front and moved into third - effectively second in the championship because one of the cars in front was not eligible for points. Two laps later there was another incident and the race was red-flagged.

"We were then told that the race would be declared a result from the positions two laps before the red flagged - but the results showed me fourth. There was a big meeting at the circuit, much arguing ensued - the electronics on one of the other cars confirming we had done three laps at racing speed at the end of the race. We just have to wait now for the official verdict to see what it has done to my championship position.

Next race - Thruxton, Hampshire, 3 September
