SCOTTISH SUCCESS FOR HUFF

  • Cambridge racer takes first and second in Highland double-header

A trip to Knockhill circuit in Scotland paid off for Cambridge-based Robert Huff as he took a win and a second place in the two rounds of the Formula Vauxhall Championship held at the circuit today, Sunday, July 30. The results move 20-year-old Huff clear at the head of the championship points table and confirm the mark he has made on his first full season of racing single-seater cars.

On his first visit to the tight and tricky circuit, built on a hill top north of Edinburgh, Huff qualified second on the grid for the first of the two 15-lap races. Driving for the Jim Russell Racing team, Huff having won the World Scholarship awarded annually by the famous racing school, he knew that strong performances in the two races could be vital to his title challenge.

"In the first race I was running second of the Formula Vauxhall Championship cars," said Huff. "I was right with the leader, but then my team-mate closed up so I had to defend my position from him as well as try to gain a place myself. I made a lunge at the leader at the tight hairpin, but I had to be satisfied with the points for second.

"The next race was just an hour later - which made it a very tiring afternoon - and thought I'd made a good start, but the driver who won the first race beat me into the first corner. I sat back for a few laps to let things settle down and then dived inside him at the hairpin. I was quickly able to open a 30 yard gap, when I heard a funny noise as I changed gear and the clutch went.

"I slowed a bit to see if it would cool and the car behind closed in. I speeded up again for a while and we went on like that for the rest of the race - I'm sure he thought I was playing some sort of mind game with him!

"Overall it was a really good weekend. I needed to score points and I achieved that, and now I'm four points ahead in the championship. I don't think that realistically we could have had a better weekend. Now I have to focus on doing well this coming weekend at Lydden in Kent - we seem to be going from one end of the country to the other at the moment!"
