HUFF CHUFFED AFTER DOUBLE WIN WEEKEND
- Single-seater and sportscar success for Cambridge driver
Robert Huff maintained his unbeaten record in Round Two of the Formula
Vauxhall Championship, at Croft, North Yorkshire, on Saturday, April 8,
the Cambridge racer making it a doubly successful weekend by taking
victory in an MG race at Mallory Park in the Midlands on Sunday. The
Formula Vauxhall race was a closely fought battle between 20-year-old Huff
and his Jim Russell Racing team-mate, Huff taking the lead off the line
and the two running neck and neck until the penultimate lap of the
20-minute race.
Huff was disappointed after Saturday morning's qualifying to only take
second place on the grid behind team-mate Joley Foster. "Foster has always
been quicker than me here, but I had really hoped to take pole," said Huff.
However, when the green light came on for the race, it was Huff who made
the best start to lead into the first corner. From then on he gave Foster
no opportunity to snatch the lead, and when his team-mate spun on the last
but one of the 15 laps the win was sealed, despite Huff's car developing a
slight misfire after the sixth lap.
"I knew if I got ahead I would be able to stay there," said Huff, who won
his drive by beating drivers from across the world to take the Jim Russell
Scholarship. "I felt I had a psychological advantage, as he had spun on
the warm-up lap, making it easier to get a good a start."
On Sunday Huff headed for the Leicestershire Mallory Park circuit, for
the 12-lap Ethyl Championship race, where he brought his MGB Roadster home
first in class. In a wet qualifying session Huff, who had raced the car
with some success last year, was quick enough to be third on the grid,
amongst much more powerful cars, and then in the race won his class by
over ten seconds.
"I'm well chuffed!" said Huff. "It's been a great weekend with two good
victories. In the Formula Vauxhall Championship we go to Snetterton next,
my 'home' circuit, and I'm confident of winning there."
Next race - Snetterton, Norfolk, April 24
