HUFF DELIGHTS HOME CROWD WITH SECOND WIN

  • Robert takes second win in front of his home crowd

Rob Huff delighted his home fans with a dominant lights to flag victory in Round 27 of the Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton today, beating off the advances of two former BTCC Champions for his second win of the season. The 24 year-old from Cambridge, in only his first season in the Championship, started from eighth on the grid and was up into second behind Yvan Muller as the pack streamed into the first corner, and displaced the reigning champion at the next corner to take the lead.

Lap after lap, the SEAT Sport UK driver held Muller and James Thompson behind to take his second BTCC victory and his seventh podium finish of the year. "Winning at Brands was good, this is just fantastic," said an elated Rob at the flag. "What a win, practically everyone I know is here and on such a beautiful day it's a very special moment for me, because everyone's come to see us, it's brilliant and it couldn't have been any better than that.

"It's definitely the best win of the two, to win from lights to flag coming from eighth on the grid, that start was a bit special! I think Hines got a bit bogged down at the start and held everyone up and with two wheels on the grass I just went round the outside of everyone and found myself behind Yvan going into the first corner. Going in, he braked a bit early and I rubbed the back of his bumper very slightly and just managed to keep a tighter line through the corner than him. Fair play to him, he could have closed the door but he gave me plenty of room. I went through and he kept the pressure on for at least half the race, I managed to pull out around half a second in the first section, but he closed it up again in the second. The car was the best it's been all weekend."

The first of the day's three 16 lap races had Rob start from 13th after struggling in qualifying with the 42 kgs of success ballast imposed following his Brands Hatch victory together with the 25 imposed on all ETCC-spec cars. A fantastic start saw him gain three places in three corners until a collision with James Kaye sent him spinning off the track and into the barrier.

He managed to restart the car and rejoined the track in last place and a fantastic drive saw him claw his way through to 13th at the flag, although he was promoted to 12th following the exclusion of Shaun Watson-Smith, who was dropped to the back of the grid for the second of the three races.

"I made a cracking start," said Rob. "Then someone hit me going into the chicane, which dropped me back two or three places, then coming out of Coram I just got fired off by James Kaye and I ended up going into the barrier. "The car was quite badly damaged but I managed to get back to 13th, but thankfully then dropped 66kg of ballast for the second race."

The second race proved just as eventful as again he made a fantastic getaway only to be punted off again on the first lap, dropping him back to 13th and another storming drive through the field saw him take eighth place at the flag.

"I got another absolutely mega start and must have overtaken four or five cars off the line by going right around the outside of everybody, "said Rob. "Then I stayed on the outside into the first corner and managed to get back onto the inside of the second corner and then somebody just hit me fairly hard from behind and I almost spun out of the race. I managed to rejoin in 13th and gradually claw my way back to ninth and then overtook Rob Collard on the last lap to finish eighth. It was a really hard race; I had to fight to regain position, the car wasn't quite to my liking with the settings and the weight was still causing problems. I was pulling cars in down the straight but was not able to outbrake them into the corners, so it was really hard work."

The series now enjoys a three week break until the final three rounds at Donington Park on September 25/26.
