HUFF DELIGHTED WITH MAIDEN BTCC VICTORY
- Robert takes 'phenomenal' win at Brands Hatch
Rob Huff took a sensational maiden victory in Round 24 of the Green Flag
MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch today. The 24 year-old,
from Cambridge, took the lead on the very last lap of an incident-packed
27-lap race to lead home his SEAT Sport UK team-mate Jason Plato.
"Phenomenal! Absolutely unreal, I can't believe it, it's a dream come true,"
said a delighted Rob at the finish. "I had a fairly good start and then got
bundled out of the way by about four or five cars on the second lap, Thompson,
Muller Bentwood and Neal all got by me but the car was fantastic, the best
it's been all day and I was able to pick them off one at a time, until I
found myself behind Thompson.
"Then, when the safety car went in for the last time, I thought I'm going
to have one last go at this on the last racing lap. Off the re-start I went
into Paddock Hill Bend and nearly hit Jason after he'd been sideways, but
he managed to do a fantastic save half way down the hill. I then managed
to get around the outside of Matt Neal and Jason. Muller also found his way
up the inside of Jason but locked up and ran wide so I just managed to sneak
up the inside of all of them to exit Druids in the lead."
Starting the first race from seventh on the grid, he made a good start to
slot in behind Luke Hines and for the opening three laps tried every which
way to pass the Vauxhall driver, without success.
A safety car period on lap four, when Dan Eaves was sidelined with an
electrical fire, bunched the pack up and as the race restarted five laps
later, Rob had a look at taking Hines around the outside at Druids, before
making his move at Paddock. It almost worked, as he dived up the inside but
then ran wide on the exit allowing Hines to retake the position. With the
race again extended to 27 laps following the safety car incident and with
one eye on getting a good grid start position for the day's second race, he
held off attempting to retake the position and allowed Tom Chilton to move
ahead on the final lap.
"I got a good start, changed the revs slightly off the line, and the two in
front made a really bad start so I had to lift off when I went into second
gear to avoid hitting them. The car felt really good and I was pushing
Hines a bit just to see whether I could pass him and I think I had the pace
to do so. He was holding me up big time but every time he was holding me
up badly I had to defend from Chilton. I let Chilton through to get a better
position for the second race and to be honest I think I was much quicker
than a lot of the cars around me. At the end though the pressure in the
rear tyres was sky high, about half a bar more than they should be and the
car wasn't quite as good as it had been. The balance was still there but the
grip had gone away."
Starting the second race from third on the grid, Rob made a good getaway
before being sideswiped by Shaun Watson-Smith before the cars even cleared
the start finish straight, which dropped him down to fifth as the pack
entered the first corner. He caught and passed Tom Chilton with a stunning
manoeuvre before the safety car was again deployed to retrieve the stricken
Watson-Smith, elevating Rob to third.
As he started to apply pressure on Colin Turkington ahead in second, the
safety car was deployed for the third time to retrieve Rob Collard who was
beached on the entry to Druids. At the restart and with his SEAT team-mate
Plato in the lead, Rob applied pressure for the remaining laps, but was
unable to find a way past Turkington as he crossed the line third.
"I made a horrendous start, far too much wheelspin, and three or four cars
passed me but somehow managed to come out of it quite well. James Thompson
hit Shaun Watson-Smith very hard going into the first corner and Thompson
then bounced off him and I managed to get up the inside of him. Then a couple
of laps later Watson-Smith lost it going down Paddock Hill Bend and I managed
to claw my way past a few more people. It was all a bit hectic really. I had
a great race with Colin Turkington. What I wanted to do was attack him enough
so Jason could pull out enough of a gap and I could make a lunge on Colin
which wouldn't affect Jason. Every time we got that kind of a gap and I got
close to Colin the safety car came out. I was also worried about the vacuum
caused by getting too close to the car in front. Three or four times where
I was getting close to him my engine cut out a little and I kept dropping
back twenty yards, so that was really frustrating - but overall it was another
fantastic result."
