HUFF RECOVERS FROM CRASH TO TAKE 7th AT OULTON
- Robert has a 'character building' weekend
Robert Huff recovered from the dramas of Saturday's qualifying to take a
fighting seventh place in Sunday's opening Green Flag MSA British Touring
Car Championship race at Oulton Park. The 24 year-old from Cambridge was
forced out in the day's second and third races though, a collision with Rob
Collard in the second race and Kelvin Burt in the third ending his chances
of a podium finish.
Starting from 10th for race one, a superb getaway saw him gain three places
by the end of the first lap, but after running as high as sixth, a coming
together with Luke Hines at Knickerbrook on lap 11 caused him to spin. He
recovered well though to fight his way back to seventh to line up on the
second row for race two.
"That was an exciting one," said Rob. "I had an OK start and took the outside
line around the first corner and then a few drivers got sideways at Cascades
and I took three places to move up to seventh. I then had a good fight with
Anthony Reid and I managed to out accelerate him out of the hairpin to move
into sixth. On lap eleven Luke Hines decided he was going to have a go at
the back of my car at Knickerbrook, which was a completely unrealistic move
and could have potentially put us both out. It didn't work though as he
managed to take himself out of the race and leave me in it. The car didn't
feel great after that, the rear tracking was out and it didn't handle very
well around left hand corners."
Race two was to prove even more dramatic after a controversial clash with
Rob Collard left the SEAT Sport UK driver fuming. "I had a flying start and
Jason and I were working really well together," said Rob. "Collard was holding
us both up until Jason got through up the inside at Old Hall. I followed
him through and was in front coming out of the corner with my wheels facing
straight and he just carried on turning right into the back of my car which
pushed us both off to the left and into the barriers. He ruined a good result,
it should have easily been second and third finishes for the team and we
should have both been on the podium."
Starting race three from the back of the grid and with his car fully repaired,
Rob had his work cut out but with another flying start and stirring drive,
he was up to 12th by the end of the first lap. His chances of moving up the
order though were cut short after a collision with Kelvin Burt damaged a
shock absorber and forced him into retirement.
"I made another good start and managed to get around five people round the
outside at the hairpin," said Rob. "I was following Michael Bentwood and
going into the hairpin he got on the brakes a bit too early, so I had to
brake too. Burt just came from nowhere and charged up the inside, smacking
into the side of me and breaking the right shock absorber."
